A great storm radio
I like this radio. During 3 hurricanes, I have wanted a hand crank radio. This one meets my needs and wants. In the Houston area, we needed the status of our area. The data that we needed was actually best obtained by tuning to the local AM 740 news radio. It became the most accurate description of the status of gasoline at service stations, road closures and the like. This radio has excellent AM reception. FM was "nice" for an escape from scary news. This radio has excellent FM reception as well. The Weather band radio uses the exact digital frequencies of the various weather bands. This radio does give you the options quickly and easily. Some reviews from other stores complained of no auto scan of these channels. I did not find this to be a problem at all. Prior to the hurricane, during the hurricane and after the hurricane, there was never a time when I would have wanted the radio to scan for a signal. The weather radio channels run a continuous statement. It is easy to find a channel with active alerts. Some have complained about the various switches being difficult to select the right function. I did not find this to be the case. My large fingers easily find the correct button. The display shows you instantly which power source you have selected (batt or dyn) and you can easily switch if you intended to switch to the other source. Ergonomically, I found the top handle of the Flashlight portion to be a natural for your left hand as you turn the hand crank in the right hand. The radio seems to work for left handed or right handed owners. The left handed folks do not get to see the battery charge level as they crank it. That is probably more of a niceity than a must have. Basically, you pick it up and crank until you are tired of cranking and them listen or charge your cell phone. If you need more charging, you crank more. I like the feel of the generator as you crank it. Some have criticized the light level of the "flashlight." The choice of LEDs is an excellent choice for max light, ruggedness, and maximum on time. The red signal LED is recessed so that it has restricted angle of visibility. I have never needed that aspect of this storm radio. Complaints: The manual says that the charge indicator LED will start as red and then transition to green when it is fully charged. This was not true for my radio. The Eton customer service tech (on the phone) said this was an error in the manual. The other "surprise" is that the battery charge level only presents information about the rechargeable battery. Since the AAA replaceable batteries do not show their charge level, you either have to test them with your own tester or just carry spares. This is true of all my flashlights so I do not consider this to be a real problem. There is not an AC adapter for charging the rechargeable battery. I have several AC to USB chargers so this was not a real negative for me. There is no case; but that is not problem for me either. The antenna does not have a real storage area. There is a recess for the tip of the antenna to partially "store" in. There are no positive means to keep it there. This may be a challenge with time. So far, it is not a problem. BOTTOM LINE: This radio seems to do what I need it to do. Even though it is built in [*], it seems to be well built. Customer service was excellent.
